Philippine Eagle (Monkey-Eating Eagle)

The Philippine Eagle

The Philippine Eagle is the national bird of the Philippines. They are considered the largest eagle and are known for hunting anything that lives in trees. (Including Monkeys) The bird was recognized as being critically endangered in 2010. This is mostly due to rapid deforestation in the Philippines. There are only a few conservation efforts trying to save this beautiful bird from extinction.

The Philippine Eagle is being threatened for many reasons. They have been hunted by poachers their entire existence, but the Philippines recently made it illegal to hunt them. Another reason why these birds are listed as critically endangered is because their home is being destroyed by deforestation and logging companies that own most of the land. They are losing their habitats and having a hard time finding food to survive.

There have been efforts of captive breeding, but it is going at a very slow rate. Scientist believe that there are less than 500 Philippine Eagles left in the wild. An average adult weighs around 15 lbs and has a wingspan of up to 7 ft.

Its up to US to raise awareness about the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. Although they are mostly only found on 4 of the Philippine islands, we need to make an effort to bring them justice. Stop the deforestation, improve captive breeding efforts, and preserve the dwindling number of eagles we have left.
